A field manual for the Neuro Spice Girls (Poppe and Phoebe): rebuild our Neuro Spice Girls Remix draft cleanly from stems, work through Phoebe's six fixes plus eight from the file analysis, and learn the skills behind each move. Two songs, two computers, one through-line.
Everything you need to start: both source songs, our draft, and the six pre-cut blueprint pieces. Grab the two zips to get it all at once, or download single files below.
Universal Hall Pass and ponyphonic, plus the Neuro Spice Girls Remix as the reference track.

Musical time: the ruler counts bars and beats (1.1.1 is bar 1, beat 1). At 112.35 BPM, a beat is about half a second and a 4-beat bar is about 2.1 seconds.
Warp, the one idea to really get
Warp on: the clip follows the project tempo, changing speed without changing pitch.
Warp off: it plays at its own speed. That's how pony plays in the remix.
Warp modes: Beats for drums, Tones for a single voice, Complex Pro for full songs. When unsure, Complex Pro.
Transpose: shifts pitch in semitones without changing speed, while Warp is on.

Section 02 // Boot
Just in time: Level 0 + Level 1
Setup: a project with the reference built in
First session is setup only: a saved project with three tracks and a reference locked to the grid. About 20 minutes.
Install Live 12 Suite (rent-to-own, or the free 30-day trial while you wait). Stem Separation needs 12.3 or later. Press Tab until you see the Arrangement View, the one that runs left to right.
Save first. File > Save Live Set As, name it Sallys Song Rebuild. Ableton makes a project folder for you.
Set the tempo. Click the number in the top left and type 112.35.
Make 3 audio tracks. Rename them REF NSG draft, UHP, PONY. Color them and keep the colors forever.
Drag in the MP3s, each at bar 1 of its own track.
Lock the reference. In Clip View, turn Warp on and check it reads about 112.35. If the grid misses the kicks, right-click the first kick and choose Set 1.1.1 Here.
Mark the blueprint. Add a locator (Create > Add Locator) at the start of each block: Intro, Pony 1, UHP Main, Breakdown, Pony 2, Crossfade, Outro.
Collect and save: File > Collect All and Save.
Keep the reference muted while you build. Solo it whenever you want to A/B, meaning flip between the original and yours. Checking against the reference is the most important habit in this project.
Section 03 // Split
Just in time: Level 1
Make the stems now, use them later
The frame rebuild only needs full songs. Stems come into play when you start changing things. The full walkthrough is in Skills, Lesson 1.
Right-click the UHP clip and choose Separate Stems to New Audio Tracks.
Keep all 4 (Vocals, Drums, Bass, Others), choose High Quality, then Separate.
Repeat for PONY.
Rename them UHP Vox, UHP Drums, UHP Bass, UHP Other, PONY Vox, and so on.
Group each song's 4 stems (Cmd+G / Ctrl+G), name the groups, fold and mute them for now.
Solo each stem for 20 seconds. Some bleed is normal. Note any watery, garbled spots.
Section 04 // Sync
Just in time: Level 1 (Warp)
Warp and key: make the two songs agree
UHP goes down 1 semitone to C# minor. Pony stays exactly as recorded, unwarped.
UHP + its 4 stems
Warp on, warp mode Complex Pro.
Set 1.1.1 Here on the first downbeat. Seg. BPM should read 112.35.
Transpose to −1 st.
Do the same on all 4 stems together.
Play UHP and pony together for 10 seconds. Messy rhythm is expected. Sour notes mean the transpose is wrong.
Pony + its 4 stems
Warp off. It plays at its own drifting speed, just like the remix.
Leave the key alone. It's already C# minor.
Forcing it to 112.35 makes it about 13% faster and rushed. The remix avoids this by never running pony's rhythm over UHP's.
Later, to put pony's vocal over UHP's beat: Warp on, right-click, Warp From Here, then fix markers bar by bar. Or move the project to about 106 BPM so each song stretches only 6 to 7%.

Pony 1, 0:24 to 1:25. Pony 0:00 to 1:01 at the Pony 1 locator. Clip Gain about −8 dB. Short fades if the handoff clicks.
UHP main, 1:25 to 2:33. UHP 0:43 to 2:05 (includes the breakdown) at UHP Main. Line up the kicks with the reference. About −4 dB.
Breakdown, 2:33 to 2:48. Auto Filter on UHP, low-pass. Automate Frequency from fully open down to about 600 Hz by 2:45, and dip the volume 4 to 6 dB.
Pony 2, 2:48 to 4:02. Pony 1:20 to its end at Pony 2, about −9 dB.
Crossfade, 4:02 to 4:20. About a 10 second fade out on pony. A UHP copy from 4:17 at Crossfade with a matching fade in. The fades cross in an X.
Outro, 4:20 to 5:20. Let that UHP clip run to the natural end, about −5 dB.
After each block: same 20 seconds, reference then yours. Check the cut timing, the volume jump, and the brightness. All three match, move on.
Section 06 // Tune
Just in time: Level 2 + Level 4
Mix and refine
Save the faithful rebuild as v01 faithful, then make each change in a new version.
Match loudness, not waveform size. Utility gain on each track until the handoffs feel even.
One bass at a time wherever things overlap.
Hide cuts with space: a Return with Reverb or Echo, and a quick send throw on the last hit before a cut.
Protect the ending: Limiter on Main, ceiling −1 dB. Export a 24-bit WAV.
Stem refinements, easiest first
Softer intro: only UHP Other and UHP Bass, drums enter on the last bar.
A vocal bridge in the breakdown: a PONY Vox phrase over the filtered UHP, high-passed at about 150 Hz, with reverb.
Drums through the crossfade: UHP Drums quietly under pony's fade out.
Bring back music that got cut: UHP 2:05 to 4:17.
The full mashup: all of PONY Vox warped over UHP's instrumental stems.

Glossary
Term
Meaning here
Stem
One layer pulled out of a finished song: vocals, drums, bass, or other. Poppe calls them layers.
Warp
Ableton stretching audio to the project tempo. Off means it plays at its own speed.
Semitone (st)
The smallest pitch step. −1 st takes UHP from D minor to C# minor.
Locator
A named marker on the timeline.
Low-pass / high-pass
Low-pass keeps the lows (muffled, underwater). High-pass cuts the lows (removes rumble).
Send / Return
One shared reverb or echo, with a knob per track for how much goes in.
A/B
Flipping between two versions to compare.
Gain
Volume in decibels. +6 dB is noticeably louder, +10 dB sounds about twice as loud.
Debrief // Phoebe's review
The outline is solid. The work is cleanup.
Sync, mud, hi-hats, levels, and the fake ending. Keep this version as the guide, split both originals into stems, and rebuild it cleaner in Ableton Live 12, each of you on your own computer.
"You want to communicate chaos. You don't want chaos."Phoebe, on the through-line
Busy is fine as long as one steady beat pulls the ear through. Lose it and the song falls apart.

What Phoebe loved
The atmospheric opening. "Really well done."
The background atmosphere and winds, which keep the empty spots from feeling empty.
The big bass in the later section.
The UHP time-change part. The best part. Slightly off, not distracting.
The beginning and the end. Most of the rework is in the middle.
The track layout. Organized the way she'd do it.

Fourteen fixes, step by step
Save a new version before each fix (v02 fix1, v03 fix2). A fix that goes wrong costs nothing. Done 0/6(saved on this device only)
01
The through-line and the slip at 0:56
Heard"Tearing my ears in two different directions." The sync slips, then snaps back.
Choose the anchor: solo UHP Drums. That kick and cymbal is the beat the ear follows the whole time.
Where both songs' drums play, mute PONY Drums: right-click and Deactivate Clip(s), or split it out and delete it.
Pin the pony parts that stay: Warp on, then double-click the waveform's top strip at each drifting downbeat to add a warp marker, and drag it onto the bar line.
At 0:56, delete the stray warp markers around the slip and rebuild them one bar at a time.
Solo the anchor plus pony. It should feel like one groove the whole way.
02
The muddy vocal
HeardUnderwater, like she's struggling to breathe. "Make it deeper" took out treble and made it thinner.
Try warp modes Complex Pro (Formants at 100%) and Tones. Keep whichever sounds most like a person.
Slow it less: try about 75% instead of half speed.
Remove the darkening EQ. Add EQ Eight: high-pass at about 120 Hz, gentle +2 dB near 3 kHz.
Get depth from a separate low layer underneath (Skills, Lesson 3). Depth comes from under her, not from muffling her.
03
Too many hi-hats
HeardA tinny sound in the middle section.
Solo every track with hats and count the layers in the middle.
Keep one hat source. Your added hats stay only in the transition they were made for.
Still tinny? EQ Eight on UHP Drums, −2 to −3 dB around 8 to 10 kHz.
04
The levels
Heard"The levels are all off."
Follow Skills, Lesson 4, start to finish. Short version: every fader down, bring up the anchor beat and the vocal first, then fit everything else under them. One busy element at a time.
05
The fake ending into piano
HeardShe liked the tease, not the struggling voice trailing out. "I want to know Sally's alive."
Find a piano moment in UHP Other or PONY Other, or play one yourself (Lesson 3).
Put it right after the last vocal line. Remove the slowed voice from the tail.
Reverb on the piano with 6 to 10 second decay, and automate Freeze on the last note. Or duplicate the last note, set warp mode to Texture, and drag its end out very long.
Fade the dry piano while the tail rings, then bring the song back so the fake-out lands.
06
Slowing an entrance
Heard"I just want to slow that down a little bit."
Ask Phoebe which moment she meant, and mark it with a locator.
Stretch the entrance: a longer fade in, or drums 1 to 2 bars after the other layers.
For a real slow-down, right-click the tempo and Show Automation, then draw a dip of a few BPM over 2 bars and back.
Optional: pull bass sounds from earlier versions if they worked better, then layer new bass on top.
From the file analysis // measured on draft v01
These came from measuring the draft MP3 section by section. Fixes 07, 08, and 10 overlap with Phoebe's mud, levels, and sync notes, so do those first. Your current Ableton version may already differ a little, so trust your ears over the numbers.

07
The pony sections carry the mud
MeasuredAbout 8 dB more energy at 250 to 500 Hz than the UHP sections, and a weaker deep low end.
Put EQ Eight on the pony group (or each pony track).
Use band 2 as a bell: about 350 Hz, gain −3 to −4 dB, wide (Q around 0.7).
Flip the EQ on and off at a pony to UHP handoff. The two songs should sound like they're in the same room. If pony turns thin, back off to −2 dB.
Let UHP Bass or your sub layer carry the deep low end under pony (Module 03, and the sidechain in Module 04).
08
Loudness sags in the pony parts
MeasuredPony 2 is about 4 dB under the UHP sections, Pony 1 about 1.5 dB under. The outro then jumps up almost 4 dB.
Raise Pony 2 about +3 dB and Pony 1 about +1.5 dB (Clip Gain or a Utility).
At 4:20, ease the outro in: automate its volume up over 2 bars instead of a jump.
Judge each handoff with your eyes closed. It should feel like one song getting a new color, not a volume change.
09
The intro partly cancels in mono
MeasuredLeft and right barely match in the intro, and it loses about 3 dB in mono. The other sections lose under 1 dB.
Phones and single Bluetooth speakers play in mono, so this is the version of the intro many people will hear.
Put Utility on the intro and atmosphere tracks. Set Width to about 70% and turn on Bass Mono.
Check it: Utility on Main with Width at 0%. The atmosphere should thin out, not vanish. Set Main back to 100% after.
10
The beat stumbles at the handoffs
MeasuredAround 0:24, 1:25, and 2:48, one beat lands about 50 to 70 ms early or late.
Zoom in on each seam (select it, press Z). Turn grid snapping off.
Cut the incoming clip exactly at its first kick, and slide it so that kick sits on the downbeat.
Add 10 to 30 ms fades on both sides of the cut.
If a seam still bumps, cover it with a reversed cymbal swell (Module 02).
11
The tempo lurches between songs
MeasuredEach switch jumps from 112 to about 99 BPM with nothing in between, so the groove suddenly drags.
Simplest: give the ear a reset at each switch, like a reverb tail, a filter sweep, or one bar of atmosphere with no drums. A new tempo after a gap feels deliberate.
Smoother: warp pony (Fix 01) and automate the song tempo from 112 to 99 over 1 to 2 bars before each switch.
Most even: meet in the middle at about 106 BPM for both songs (Rebuild section 04).
12
The breakdown is mostly rumble
MeasuredOnce the filter closes, nearly all the energy sits below 120 Hz. You feel it more than hear it.
Keep the filter sweep, and add something in the middle for the ear to follow: the PONY Vox bridge (Rebuild section 06) or the pad from Module 03.
High-pass the new layer at about 200 Hz so it doesn't add to the rumble.
If the low end still booms, lower the UHP bass by 2 to 3 dB for just this section.
13
The width jumps between songs
MeasuredThe pony sections are noticeably wider than the UHP sections, so the space changes shape at every switch.
Utility on the pony group, Width about 85%.
A/B across a handoff. The room should stay the same size.
14
The finished master is quiet
Measured−16.4 LUFS for the whole song. The source songs sit around −9 to −11.
Do this last, after every other fix and the balance pass (Module 04).
Limiter on Main, ceiling −1 dB. Raise its gain slowly until the loud sections match the originals at the same playback volume.
Aim for about −12 LUFS. Streaming apps turn loud songs down anyway, and stopping there keeps the dynamics Phoebe liked.
If the drums start to lose their punch, you've gone too far. Back off 1 dB.
Monitors // calibrate
Listening setup
Mix on headphones, check on speakers, and keep switching until both sound right. Headphones put every sound exactly where it sits. Speakers add the room's echo and boom, which is why DJs mix on headphones.
Sound going to the wrong place: Settings > Audio (Live > Settings on Mac, Options > Settings on Windows), then pick your device under Audio Output Device. Each of you sets this once.
Bluetooth headphones add a delay. Wired is better for timing work.
Quick check: the same 30 seconds on headphones, then speakers. If something vanishes on one, fix it rather than turning it up blindly.

Working on two computers
Phoebe needs her own Ableton license. One license covers up to 2 computers owned by the registered user and can't be shared between people. Rent-to-own can't be transferred until it's paid off.

What it means for us
30-day Suite trial
Free
Everything works. A good start while she decides.
Intro
$99
16 audio and 16 MIDI tracks, no Stem Separation. Our layout is about 15 tracks: tight.
Standard
$349
Unlimited tracks, no Stem Separation. Fine if Poppe makes all the stems.
Suite (buy or rent-to-own)
$749
Everything, including Stem Separation.
Match versions: both on the same Live 12 version, 12.3 or later. A set saved in a newer version may not open in an older one.
If Phoebe isn't on Suite: before handing off a track that uses a Suite-only device, right-click it and Freeze Track, then Flatten. Stems are plain audio and open anywhere.
Rent-to-own catch: Live must go online at least every 3 days, or saving and exporting pause.
Sharing the project
One shared cloud folder (Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud) called Sally's Song.
Before handing off: File > Collect All and Save. Share the whole project folder. The .als file alone holds no audio.
Wait until the folder is fully synced before the other person opens it.
The baton rule
Only one person edits the main project at a time. Text: "I have the baton."
Name every save with a number and initials: Sally v05 PO, then Sally v06 PH. Never save over the other's version.
Passing the baton: one line on what changed and what to listen for.
Solo experiments: Save As your own copy (Sally v06 PH experiment). To borrow one track, find that .als in Ableton's Browser, open it like a folder, and drag the track in.
Training program // 4 modules
The skills behind every fix
Do these in order, each on its own copy (practice lesson 1, and so on), so nothing you try can hurt the real version.

Module 01
Making stems
A stem is one layer of a finished song: vocal, drums, bass, or everything else. Ableton's Stem Separation (Suite, 12.3+) makes 4 from any audio file.
Make them
Drag the original song onto a new audio track.
Right-click the clip, Separate Stems to New Audio Tracks.
Keep all 4: Vocals, Drums, Bass, Others. High Quality (High Speed only for previews).
Separate, and wait. Faster on Apple silicon, slower on Windows or Intel Macs.
Rename, color per song, and group the 4 (Cmd+G / Ctrl+G).
Check them (10 minutes, worth it)
Solo each stem for 20 seconds at the start, middle, and end. Write down what you hear, with the timestamp.
Bleed: a little of one part leaking into another. Normal. EQ handles it.
Warble: watery or garbled, usually on busy vocal moments. Don't feature those exposed.
Holes: a part that drops out. Grab that moment from the full song.
Clean them up
Vocal: EQ Eight high-pass at about 120 Hz removes kick and bass bleed.
Bass: low-pass at about 5 kHz removes cymbal bleed.
Silence between phrases: split out and delete, or add a Gate.
Before sharing: transpose the 4 UHP stems −1 st together. Select the 4 stem tracks, right-click, Freeze Track, then Flatten. Plain audio, already in key, opens anywhere.
Module 02
Building pieces
A piece is any chunk you cut, loop, or reshape from a stem. Most mashup work is making good pieces and placing them well.

Fades
Drag the clip's corner handle
Removing clicks at every cut
Resample
New audio track, Audio From: Resampling, record
Printing anything you hear into a new clip
A clean drum loop
In UHP Drums, find 1 bar with clean kick and cymbal.
Grid on, select exactly that bar, consolidate.
Duplicate 8 times. Listen for clicks at the seams and add tiny fades.
That's your through-line for Fix 01.
A transition swell
Copy 2 beats of cymbal and reverse it.
Place it so it ends exactly on the next downbeat.
Add Reverb and resample for a bigger swell.
Save pieces to the Browser (drag clips into Places > Current Project) so they're easy to grab and share.
Module 03
Composing new layers
New layers are parts you play or draw on a MIDI track. Everything here is in C# minor. Stay on its 7 notes and anything you add fits.
What
Notes
C# minor scale
C# D# E F# G# A B
Safe chords
C#m (C# E G#) · A (A C# E) · B (B D# F#) · E (E G# B) · F#m (F# A C#)
Where UHP's bass mostly sits
C#, E, G#, D#. A rough automated read, so confirm by playing along with UHP Bass.
Setup (once)
MIDI track: Cmd+Shift+T / Ctrl+Shift+T. Drag an instrument onto it.
Select some bars and press Cmd+Shift+M / Ctrl+Shift+M for a clip. Double-click to edit notes.
Turn on Scale in the clip and choose C# Minor. Fitting notes get highlighted.
No keyboard? Press M to play with your computer keys, record, then Quantize (Cmd+U / Ctrl+U).
Four layers for Sally's Song
Hats, transition only (Fix 03). A kit from Browser > Drums. Closed hats on every 8th note for 2 to 4 bars, with varied velocity. Quiet.
Low layer for vocal depth (Fix 02). A sine or sub preset (Drift works). Long low notes following the bass. EQ everything above about 150 Hz away.
Pad to extend the atmosphere. Hold C#m, A, B for 2 bars each. Cut below about 200 Hz. You should miss it when muted more than notice it when playing.
Piano tail (Fix 05). C#, E, G#, slowly, last note held. Long Reverb, automate Freeze on the final note.
The mute test: loop the section and mute and unmute the new layer. Worse without it: keep. Can't tell: delete. Mud usually comes from layers that fail this test.
Module 04
Levels and mixing
Give every layer its own space: in loudness, in pitch range, and left to right. Most mud and tinniness is two layers fighting for the same space.
Step 1: Balance (always first)
Every fader all the way down.
Anchor drums up until the loudest hits reach about −10 dB.
Main vocal up until it sits clearly on top.
Bass, then everything else, each just loud enough that you'd miss it.
Main meter peaks at or below −6 dB.
Check every handoff. Pony was mastered 8 to 9 dB louder than UHP, so match what you hear.
Step 2: Carve with EQ
EQ Eight on everything except kick and bass: cut below about 100 to 150 Hz.
Under the vocal, dip pad and Other stems 2 to 3 dB around 300 Hz and 2 to 4 kHz.
A Spectrum device shows where each track's energy sits.
Step 3: Sidechain the bass to the kick
Compressor on the bass and sub layer.
Sidechain on, Audio From UHP Drums or a kick track.
Ratio 4:1, threshold down to 2 to 4 dB of reduction per kick.
Step 4: Automation
Press A, click points on a volume line, drag to shape. Lift the atmosphere in the gaps, duck the pad under vocals, shape the fake ending.
Step 5: Finish and check
Pan atmosphere, hats, and pad slightly. Kick, bass, vocal stay centered.
Mono check: Utility on Main, Width 0%. Hidden mud shows up here. Back to 100% after.
Limiter last on Main, ceiling −1 dB.
A/B against the REF and a finished song you love, at the same volume, on headphones and speakers.
Export: WAV, 24-bit, 44.1 kHz, plus an MP3 for phones.
Mix at low to medium volume, with a 10 minute break every 45 minutes.
